You can definitely pull off the stacking on the left here, but you'll need to either link the speech balloons to draw the eye downward or place them in a way that it become obvious which one you need to read next. Don't be afraid to let the balloons break the panel borders or overlap previous panels - this is probably the best way to direct the eye.
